Chlorine is one of the most abundant elements in nature. It is naturally occurring and present in large quantities in nature. In our daily life, chlorine is used as a disinfectant and bleach that can be used to clean substances in our homes. It is also used in measured quantities in water to prevent contamination and spread of water borne diseases. Hence, the term chlorinated water that is used to describe water that has been purified with addition of chlorine.

It is also used extensively in swimming pools to prevent the spread of infection among the users of the pool and to keep the water clean and pure. Some people are allergic to chlorine, but they may not know their allergy exists until they are exposed to the chemical. Allergic reaction to chlorine is a type four allergy, also known as a cell-mediated or delayed allergy. After being exposed to chlorine, one can tell he is allergic to it by watching for certain signs and symptoms. An example would be when you felt like you are having an asthma attack after a swim in the pool, the same shortness of breath, tightness in the chest? This could be an indication that you are allergic to chlorine. Although very rarely fatal, an allergic reaction to chlorine can cause moderate to severe discomfort in many people.

There are several different ways an individual can get exposed to chlorine such as direct contact with skin and eyes, inhaling or breathing in chlorine fumes, or ingestion. In order to successfully identify an allergic reaction, you must be aware of the symptoms. Chlorine allergy symptoms can be classified into different categories based on the various body parts or organs adversely affected by it.

Skin is living and breathing, and it absorbs everything it comes in contact with. Chemicals are directly absorbed into the bloodstream and while cosmetics and aging creams come under scrutiny for better regulations, cleaning products are not that fortunate. Most commercial cleaners contain harsh chemicals that strip away protective bacteria and alter the ph balance.

Chlorination kills bacteria, parasites and harmful organisms. Most people would never smell the chlorine in their water. However, small amounts over time could cause occurrence of chlorine allergy symptoms. Chlorine will bond to the skin and hair, destroying your body’s’ natural balance, which in turn can lead to immune disruption.

Chlorine allergy symptoms are the following: Unusual dryness of the skin is perhaps the first exhibited symptom of chlorine allergy. the infected area feels tight, itchy and goes red, and in some cases may even begin to peel. Another is eye irritation, which occurs if one’s eyes consistently become itchy, red, dry or watery after coming in contact with chlorine, there is a possibility that person may have a chlorine allergy.

Exposure to chlorine affects the respiratory system of an individual. These people generally suffer from symptoms mimicking asthma, like wheezing, coughing, sneezing, shortness of breath, a feeling of tightness in the chest, and in some extreme cases maybe get a feeling of suffocation. And in cases of ingestion can cause gastrointestinal complaints.

A direct, accidental ingestion of a chlorinated substance can cause nausea and vomiting. It is also a common symptom if chlorine fumes are inhaled in any way. This may also lead to dizziness or delusional feeling in some extreme cases. In inhalation of chlorine fumes person’s nose becomes itchy or stuffed up chlorine allergy could be a possible cause.

Prevent Chlorine Allergy

To cut the risk of any chlorine allergy symptoms, start avoiding harsh detergents and chemicals in commercial cleaning products by making your own cleanser or purchasing organic products. Switching to organic cotton towels, bedding and clothing will help to avoid exposure to any chlorine byproducts. And more importantly, use a filtering system to minimize the amount of chemicals in tap water.
